Paris 2024 organizers are planning to distribute 200,000 condoms to athletes in Olympic Village. This is nothing new, as Olympic Village has a reputation for sex and carousing between athletes during the games. Condoms were first made widely available during the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, South Korea. This was mostly to promote HIV and AIDS awareness.
The 2016 games in Rio de Janeiro saw 450,000 condoms in distribution to the athletes. The previous two events were different, however, due to COVID-19 concerns.
Paris organizers plan 200,000 condoms for men and 20,000 for women, which is about 20 each for the 10,500 athletes expected to participate.
“We don’t know how many people are likely to use them and obviously we’ll adapt to the requirements if needed,”said Laurent Dalard, first aid and health services coordinator for the Paris games.
The Olympic Games will take place from July 26 to August 11 this summer.
